Civil War

The Civil War was a big turning point for the country because it has shaped this country drastically. This war started in 1861 because southern states conflicted with the north's laws. Back then anytime a state disagreed with the laws they would split away from the rest of the states. The northern states that wanted the country to stay together and called themselves the Union. The southern states that wanted slavery called themselves the confederates. This war was started when the south had fired the first shots on Fort Sumter. The Union had surrendered at Fort Sumter. Over a period of a couple years it was nonstop battle between the Confederates and the Union. Then came the biggest battle in the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg lasted 3 days, people came to spectate on the first day. Months after Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln came to the battle site, made it a greatly known cemetary for those who died in battle and wrote a speech dedicated to all of the brave soldier on both sides who died during this battle, shapping America. The Confederate troops got smaller and they were ready to give up, after another battle or two they finnally surrendered. American became one country again with everyone working in harmony, and slave free. This war was a huge part in history, it ended slavery and brought everyone closer.
